Report from Stephen Gibbons (Lucan CC)

Ard Scoil Eanna Crumlin Road Dublin 12 enjoyed learning Track cycling Skills last Monday 8th Feb at the Sundrive cycling track in Eamon Ceannt Park. A cold day but that didn’t dampen the spirit of the 1st & 2nd year students. Two of the attending pupils, Kevin McGuinness and Killian Burke are members of the local cycling club based at the Sundrive Track, and were able to lead their classmates in the drills under the direction of track coaches Stephen Gibbons and Alec Darragh. Sundrive Track Team cyclists Andrea Fagan and John Coates were also in hand to help put the students through there paces

The students learned to handle the bikes on the grass before being let onto the track. Once up on the track they quickly got to grips of starting and stopping on a bike with no brakes. This mastered they moved onto cycling in pairs then closer as a bunch. There favourite was The Snake (follow the leader ) taken them all over the track and using the banking to vary and control speed. They finished the session with some drag racing which got very competitive and some re-matches had to be run.

Another date was set so we’ll see them soon for more fun.

Cyclox C/ships : Greg Campbell

Posted February 10, 2010

We would like to welcome new club signing Greg Campbell and congratulate his on his fine performance in the National CycloX Championships held in St Anne's Park last weekend. He placed 4th in the strongly contested Vets category although he did at least taste success as they had mistakingly announced him as 3rd on the day and it did get us a mention on IrishCycling.com! Overall he was happy with his performance, as he felt he paced him self well and felt he gave all he had to give although in his own words it was quite slippy and he would have placed higher overall if hed stayed on just a bit more!

Development Camp - Report

Posted February 10, 2010

Sundrive Track Team were represented by two riders and two coaches at the weekend Road Development Camp in Westport over the weekend. Terry Cromer was there in his capacity as National Track Sprint coach and Hugh Byrne was there representing the Track commission and to support our two riders John Walsh and Andrea Fagan. The basis of this weekend was to establish development teams for male & female cyclists and was attended by nearly 80 riders.  Both our riders exceeded our expectations and gave a good account of themselves. John who started cycling just last summer is now a first year senior which means he had to contend with vastly more experienced riders of considerable ability which was a major step up, however he coped with it well and this bodes well for his ability to become competive over the coming season.   Andrea had been following a targetted program since December and it has certainly paid dividends with huge improvement evident and was one of the dominant female riders at the camp.  A good weekends training for all in the beautiful (but rolly!) countryside of Mayo.

Track Training - Sundrive

Posted January 25, 2010

We have had two good days training on the track over the last two weekend although it was quite cold. Liam Walker commented that he had never seen anyone training on the track in January before, but if we want to achieve world domination, then we will have to put up with the cold!

Track training every Saturday 10.30 to 12.30 (weather permitting). If the weather is too bad for the track we will be doing a road spin of approx 2 hours duration from the rear gate .

Please note that as and for February and March, 'accreditations' will only be held on 1st and 3rd Saturdays on the month and come the start of the season proper, they will only be once a month. Full details of all sesions will be on the calendar on www.trackcycling.ie . We have to make this change as we need to spend more time upskilling the current track riders and move them all up to the next level.

Our Club road spins are going well and distnace and pace is starting to go up as you would expect this time of year.

Ice Age over!

Posted January 15, 2010
Ice Age over - so lets get the training back into the open air!

We will be back at the track this coming Saturday 10.30 to 12.30 (weather permitting) and club road spin at 10am from our usual meeting place (rear gate of Sundrive Park). Some riders had been training regularly up to Christmas and were going quite well and hopefully they managed to get some sort of training to maintain their fitness.

This coming Sunday there is Leinster Road Training Camp for U14/U16 riders and I will be bringing some of our riders to this so I will miss the Sunday spin but to move forward as a club we need to train for the comng season and to train together!  Weather for Sunday is good, so no excuses.

Our club will also be sending Andrea and John to the Development Road Camp in Castlebar on 6th/7th of February and I hope to have some news of a Foundation Level Track Coaching Course soon.

Welcomes New Members

Posted December 19, 2009

We in the Sundrive Club would very much like to welcome three new senior members who have chosen to join us for the 2010 season. These riders have opted for Sundrive because even though the all posess road bikes, their primary interest in in fixed and track racing. Andrea Fagan and Natalie Grieve have transeferred from Irleand's biggest road club, Orwell Wheelers and we are very pleased to expand our female section with two such experienced track riders. Indeed these two riders ride fixed as their weapon of choice on the road too! We are also pleased to welcome ex Usher rider John Coates who has immersed himself in the Sundrive scene all year and has been a great help at training sessions when we are teaching new riders. We had our club sign on meeting earlier in the week and it relaxed and sociable affair and we we also happy that the riders who signed with us in 2009 were happy to share our vision of where we want Ireland's only Track Club to be a central force in promoting our chosen aspect of the sport and especially to continue the inrease the use of the track by local youth. This should be greatly aided by the interest that Stephen Gibbons (Lucan) and Alec Darragh (Sundrive) will stir up when they recommence the visitation of the local schools with the 'Track Roadshow' and their planned school track accredditations and training in January 2010.

Perrine's New Bike

Posted December 6, 2009

Perrine has taken delivery of her Keirin track frame which she purchased on her recent trip to the Cycle Messenger World Championships in Japan.  See link to a short video of her putting it together. The video empasises the beauty and simpicity of a track bike not wthstanding how easy she makes it look in putting it together. This is a skill we very much plan to impart to all our young riders over the winter months.

IVCA Awards Dinner

Posted December 2, 2009

Track riders featured prominently in the IVCA prize winners presented at the IVCA Awards Diknner in the Springfield Hotel on Sunday (29th Nov). Highlight of the evening was a special award presented to Terry Cromer in recognition of the Silver Medal he won at the European Masters Track Championship and a speech by former National Track Sprint Champion, Eddie Dunne on Irish Track Racing.

Terry also received the medals he won in the IVCA Track Championships as did Eddie who gave a masterful display in the Sprint. Terry and his wife Maureen were invited as guests to the dinner was very appreciative of the support of the IVCA in sponsoring the IVCA Track Championships and their support for our club and track racing in general. Terry was also honoured at the Cycling Ireland Dinner and as he says himself.............he has got great mileage out of that 500m!

Club Member Honoured

Posted November 25, 2009

I see that from information published  at The Cycling Ireland AGM recently our club placed 51st of the the 177 registered cycling clubs with 41 licenced members. We have had some additions since then and also it doesn't count our members which ride on an IVCA licence. This is pretty impressive for a club only in its 2nd year. Our challenge now is to grow this and to develop our young riders and help them move to the next level and indeed to encourage them to move into other aspects of cycling also. We are delighted that many of our riders consider themselves 'trackies' but other disciplines will compliment their skills and longer track events aren't won without stamina and those sprint skills can be put to good use on the road! It is also inevitable that some of our younger riders may be infrequent over the winter, but we will keep in touch and encourage them back when the weather improves come spring.

As an aside I was awarded Honorary Life Membership by my previous club, Swords CC for my contibution to them down the years and in recognition of our work in the promotion of track racing. This was indeed a big deal to me as as it showed great support for what we do and it is quite unusual to be bestowed this at such a 'relatively' young age.  I told them that this might come back to bite them in the ass as I believe I haven't quite peaked yet! I also told them that they would always be welcome at Sundrive should they want to have a go at some 'real' racing!   Sticking with Sundrive though as I believe that our club with a huge force in track racing and beyond..................and our kit is definitely cooler! (Hugh)

Trip To Revolution

Posted November 24, 2009

Six of our members travelled with with the Track Commission trip to see the Revolution Track Meet in Manchester. For some of them it was their first close up look at an indoor velodrome and their first experience of the speed and excitement of an indoor track meet of elite track riders. The event as per normal was sold out and the crowd were treated to a huge variety of events. Our riders we suitably impressed and our next move will be to get those riders to complete the experience by getting them to ride on such a track. Meanwhile training continues every Saturday on the track (weather permitting) and road spins for those with road bikes on Sundays. We would like to encourage more members to partake in these spins as it is the strenght and stamina built up on such spins over the Winter months that can then be honed and sharpened come Spring into what is required to have a sucessful season on the track in 2010.
